UV FILTER: A cautionary tale

When I bought my new camera, the first thing that I did was to buy a UV filter for it. Yeah, I know that it makes the skies bluer and the clouds whiter, but let’s face it, I don’t really take that many photos of skies. Or clouds. No, I bought it to protect my lens.

I know that it may seem like a waste of 30 €, but for me it’s worth it. Here’s why: if your new fancy-pants camera falls off the tripod because you didn’t secure it properly, it will surely fall right on its heavy zoom lens. If you have a UV filter on it and if you’re veryvery lucky, the 30 € UV filter will be broken instead of the much-more-expensive zoom lens.

A word to the wise...

Smart cookie:) I bought them also..but they're not the fun kind that change anything..just Hoya ordinary ones..Do the good ones really make things outside look more vivid?Sure wish I had a tip for indoors..My Christmas photos are gold:(

Well, Santa did not come through with a new camera for me, Kate, so I cannot comment on your post. I guess I was a bad girl! :0

Just like Barbara....I didn't get a DLSR...nor diapers or milk. I did have cookies though and some delicious rocky road so....you can't have it all! Enjoy your camera and if you ever think of giving it away....remember me :-)

What good advice! Thanks!! I see a fancy camera in my future (I'm doing research to see what would be a good fit, so I'm open to any suggestions you may have). :)

Good advice! I got a new camera also. Its pants aren't as fancy as your camera's, but I am lovin' it! :)

I have them on all of my lenses...it was the first order of business. I'm off today to get one for my son's new lens. I do take it off though, under certain indoor conditions (and cross my fingers I don't do anything crazy!)

Glad to see you're having fun with your camera and good to see the damage on the filter and not your new toy!

Kate,
Now that's some useful advice. I've been putting them off but I will get one today! That would be my first order of business. I am so happy your filter was damaged and not your new camera.

Good advice, Kate! We got a new DSLR camera for Christmas (our first!) and I'm already falling in love with it. Heaven forbid anything bad happens to it! I've already ordered a UV filter and hope it arrives soon.

Now I know why I got my lens! I personally didn't wait til christmas to get my fancy schmancy DSLR (I figured I deserved it earlier....). But I did get a wonderful book on digital photography to clarify all those button mysteries.
Thank's for stopping by THE FOREIGN KITCHEN!

You're so right Kate! I have filters on all my lenses (except one, which is sort of a little bend so a filter doesn't screw on anymore) You can also use a skylight filter which is a little more neutral then an UV filter and can be cheaper sometimes too.. :)

The exact thing happened to my camera but in my case the whole tripod and camera fell over. The lens wasn't damaged but the place where it connects to the camera was. I had to buy a new zoom lens :(
